"'Brace' is an unsettling tug-of-war between the primitive and the hyper-modern. Beginning life as a brutal, towering monolith of a drum track, the track quickly evolves into something else entirely. Tightly weaved layers of tribal rhythm begin to unravel, fast-forwarding 10,000 BC for a grandiose, call-to-arms break down. But It's not long before the HD emotion is stripped away and we're plunged back into the cave.
On the 2, CYPHR flips the script completely, eschewing terror and a dark, earthy sound palette for something altogether more neon. 'Gloss Finish', as the title might suggest, is a streamlined, hands-in -the-air slab of feel-good, funky techno. Yet CYPHR refuses to settle for a straight-forward club track, keeping his rhythms restless and unpredictable; when a 4/4 kick drum is deployed out of the blue, its a shocker, a tool to sweep the rug from under the dancer's feet.
The 'restless hybridity' of MM & Suda's 2014 releases on Her Records is continued in 'Brace/Gloss Finish'. It's a bold statement from an artist with a lot to say in 2014. "
